Council to instal re-paid water meters

THE Gwanda municipality will soon start installing pre-paid water meters as part of efforts to solve water problems afflicting the town.
This was revealed during a full council meeting in the council chambers on Wednesday. The Mayor, Councillor Knowledge Ndlovu, said the municipality had resolved to instal pre-paid meters, a move expected to reduce water challenges facing the town.

“We have noted that because of the water problems which the town has been facing, we should instal pre-paid meters for the residents,” said Clr Ndlovu.

“We need to account for all the water consumed because Zinwa is saying they are selling us lots of water.”
Clr Ndlovu said the council had already embarked on a pilot project in the town to see if the exercise would work. The pilot project started last month.

“We have an ongoing project and it is progressing well. Therefore, we see it fit that we do the same for our residents because that is the only way that can help us control the high consumption rate. The situation in Gwanda has not been well due to water problems,” said Clr Ndlovu.

Recently, the town was facing serious water challenges after Zinwa rationed supplies, demanding that the council settles its $5 million debt.

However, the full council meeting avoided discussing the issue surrounding the part payments of the debt made to Zinwa as has been published by some sections of the media. It could not be revealed  what the council did for Zinwa to restore normal water supplies to the town.

Meanwhile, the council is also planning to install a communal tap in Spitzkop North Extension to bring relief to residents without running water at their homes.
