Gweru City Council has tendered for the installation of road signs and public lighting in a move aimed improving road infrastructure and complying with SADC standards.
The rehabilitation work is funded through the Zinara Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme. Gweru City Council roads engineer Miss Beauty Chimedza said the local authority has tendered for the supply and installation of road signs in the central business district and installing more street and tower lights in high density suburbs and crime hotspots.
“We currently have 77 tower lights working in the city and this is not effective. We are looking to upgrade the city to world class state by the year 2030. Therefore all urban streets should have functional tower lights. However for now we will priorities strategic areas,” she said.
Eng Chimedza said the poor road signage is a potential source of danger for the motoring public as well as pedestrians.
Meanwhile, Zinara has allocated an additional $2,6 million to Gweru City Council for its road rehabilitation programme this year.
