HARARE City Council will take water samples for testing to help fight any outbreak of diarrhoea.
City Health department epidemiologist, Dr Michael Vere, said they had discovered, during previous outbreaks, that most boreholes were contaminated, hence the outbreak of diarrhoea and typhoid.
“This is the right time to prepare for diarrheal diseases.
“We are going to take water samples from all sources that people use in the communities for testing, starting with the high-risk areas like Glen View and Budiriro.
“We will be taking samples from boreholes and wells because we know people drink water from wells as well,” he said.
Dr Vere said the exercise was important in preventing diarrheal outbreaks.
“We are conducting this exercise to ensure that residents have safe drinking water. We are working flat out to ensure that people have municipality water.
“The exercise will help us because we have noticed that borehole water will be contaminated during most outbreaks.”
Meanwhile, Council has warned that the high-density suburbs of Dzivarasekwa, Kuwadzana, Glen View and Glen Norah have low water pressure, especially in elevated areas, while Highlands, Borrowdale, Mt Pleasant and Hatcliffe are not receiving water at the moment.
Council spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende, said supplies are expected to improve as chemical stocks increase, and other mechanisms for equitable distribution are being explored.
