adminThe decision has irked the officials who had hoped to graduate and become legislators. By virtue of the majority councillors being district chairpersons, organisers and district secretaries, they have influence on who should be elected as the party’s parliamentary candidates.
MDC-T organising secretary, Mr Nelson Chamisa, confirmed the party was instituting election regulations and guidelines. He dismissed the councillors’ fears. Mr Chamisa said the national council, which approves the regulations, was only meeting in September to adopt the guidelines.
“We are not an elite club. We do not discriminate against anybody provided they meet and suit the guidelines provided for candidate selection,” he said.
He said once candidate selection procedures had been made available to the party structures — it is when “those with an appetite to put forward their candidature for consideration” should do so. A resolution barring any party member from contesting as members of the national executive and standing committee is expected to be passed next week. The resolution being sponsored by some Harare Members of the House of Assembly who fear to be toppled by the “hardworking councillors” will
unfortunately affect all other councillors and party members who are not in leadership positions.
