There are 32 urban councils and 60 rural district councils.
During an interactive session with Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo at the ongoing third biennial Zimbabwe Local Government Association conference here, the councillors said they should be allowed to buy vehicles duty-free just like legislators.
They also want a review of their allowances taking into consideration the roles they perform, which include assisting at funerals and attending functions. There was also a suggestion that the councillors should not pay rates and levies.
In a paper presented to Minister Chombo by Zilga president Mr Nimrod Chiminya, the councillors want Government to increase the amount councils can borrow without seeking Government approval.
