A TOTAL of 24 out of 25 councillors at Chirumanzu Rural District Council have passed a resolution to suspend council chairman, Councillor Thembinkosi Nyoni Miti, with immediate effect.
The resolution, adopted during a recent special council meeting attended by Chirumanzu District Development Coordinator, Mr Joram Chimedza, will remain in place pending guidance from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
The ministry is now expected to consider the matter and determine the next course of action.
Mr Chimedza confirmed the development, saying he was in the meeting where the resolution was adopted.
“I can confirm that councillors resolved to suspend their chairperson.
“However, I am not at liberty to divulge further details at this stage as the matter will be referred to the Ministry of
Local Government and Public Works for guidance on the way forward,” said Mr Chimedza.
“24 out of 25 councillors passed a resolution to suspend the council chairman.”
However, sources at the RDC told this publication that Clr Miti is facing several allegations, including alleged mismanagement of council affairs resulting in poor service delivery.
Clr Miti is also being accused of unauthorised use of council and estate funds, and operating parallel structures within the local authority.
“The chairman also stands accused of attending external events on behalf of the council without authorisation, irregularly acquiring a council vehicle without following established procedures, and failing to adequately account to fellow councillors,” said the source on condition of anonymity.
Clr Miti confirmed the development when contacted for comment.
“Yes, some councillors passed the resolution to suspend me during the recent council meeting.
“However, the allegations are baseless. I’m not an executive chairman, and therefore some of the accusations do not hold water,” he said.
