THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will conduct counselling at Bulawayo schools due to increasing reports of sexual and drug abuse, pregnancies and general indiscipline, an education official has said.
The acting Deputy Provincial Education Director for Secondary Schools Donatus Moyo yesterday said the counselling sessions will be conducted at all schools in the province, starting with the affected ones.

“As a way of preventing such incidents, counselling sessions will be carried out at all schools especially those whose cases have been reported,” said Moyo during a prize-giving ceremony held at Founders’ High School on Friday.

Recently, a Sobukhazi High School pupil gave birth in the school’s toilet and the education ministry has since said she is free to return to class.
Last week, two pupils were caught at the same school having sex in a classroom.

At St Columbus High School, 16 pupils were suspended for drinking beer within the school’s premises.
The acting District Education Officer for Bulawayo Central, Jane Ndebele, who also attended the Founders’ High School prize-giving day, said she was impressed by a change of behaviour at some schools that were previously dogged by scandals.

She singled out Eveline Girls’ High.
Founders’ headmistress Dorothea Moyo said last year the school’s Ordinary Level pass rate was 30 percent and 83 percent for Advanced level
“Our Ordinary Level pass rate is low because at lower secondary there is no selection. We enroll everyone regardless of their grades and at A-Level we take the best students,” said the headmistress.

The School Development Committee handed over a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus to the school.
