A Bulawayo couple, Smodern Gwizi and Leratho Dube, owners of the Nkosibusise Bottle Store in Trenance, Bulawayo, were arrested on Independence Day, along with 20 patrons after authorities discovered that the establishment was frequented by members of the LGBTIQ community.
The raid, which took place amid heightened scrutiny of local businesses, has drawn significant attention and concern from the community.
Witnesses reported that the raid occurred in the late evening, shortly after the store had begun to fill with customers celebrating the national holiday.
A fellow business owner in the area, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that they had previously raised concerns about the activities at the Nkosibusise Bottle Store.
“We had observed certain behaviors and gatherings that seemed to attract a different crowd,” they explained.
“We felt it was necessary to bring it to the attention of the authorities, leading to this raid. It’s a delicate situation, and we just wanted to ensure our community’s values were upheld.”
The anonymous business owner further expressed concern about the potential ramifications for local businesses.
“This kind of attention can scare away customers and affect our livelihoods. However, we also need to have conversations about inclusivity and acceptance. It’s a tough balance,” they added.
The couple, Gwizi and Dube, have been known in the community for their hospitality and have built a loyal customer base at their bottle store.
Friends and patrons have expressed their shock at the arrests, emphasizing that the establishment was a place for socializing and community gathering, regardless of sexual orientation. “It was never about anything harmful; it was just a space where everyone felt welcome,” said one regular patron who wished to remain unnamed.
