A couple fought outside the Harare Civil Court yesterday after attending a maintenance hearing.

Joyce Chingwende and her partner, Richard Chingwende, left onlookers surprised when they exchanged blows outside the Civil Court before they were separated by a policeman.

Joyce took Richard to court demanding $40 000 for the upkeep of their minor child.

Richard, however, told the court that he was unable to pay $40 000 and offered $10 000 instead, saying the child is below five years.

“Your Worship, I want to offer   $10 000 because I don’t work. Sometimes I sleep without eating nekutoshaya chekubata mumba yet she is claiming $40 000, where will I get it?”

Joyce was not happy with Richard’s offer.

“That’s peanuts; how can someone who is normal offer $10 000 for his child inokwaneyi iyo mari yemadomasi,” said Joyce.

Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered Richard to pay $20 000 with effect from the end of February.

Joyce was angry when she left the courtroom and the two started arguing before they engaged in a physical fight.
