THE indictment of Bright Zhantali for trial in the High Court on his latest batch of charges for multiple murders was deferred .
On Wednesday, the Magistrates Court was still waiting for the results of a psychiatric evaluation on the accused, who is at present being detained in the Chikurubi Maximum Prison Psychiatric Unit.
Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi postponed the matter to November 8.
Zhantali faces charges of allegedly killing three women.
The State is alleging that on July 17, 2020 at around 7pm, Zhantali approached Priscilla Chidhakwa (24). He offered her US$10 for the night and said he wanted to go to his place in Mabvuku but took her to Donnybrook Race Course where he raped her and then killed her.
The court heard that Zhantali threw her body into a trench.
The next day Marvelous Matondo saw the body with the neck and hands tied with pieces of blankets and promptly called the police.
On December 7, 2021, at around 1 pm, Zhantali was approached by Manyara Chisora (46) looking for a piece of land to rent.
Zhantali allegedly showed her the land and as they went to her house to sign the lease documents, he raped her before he struck her three times using the back of an axe, killing her. He fled after stealing groceries, Huawei Honor cellphones, blankets, and some clothes.
At around 5 pm, a relative of Ms Chisora aged 15, returned home from collecting Mazhanje fruit from the bush and found her dead in her bedroom.
She told her aunt who went to the scene and they informed Cecilia Maphovire who filed a police report.
Zhantali is also accused of murdering Spiwe Nyamoto (50) after he hired her for all-night services and raped her before killing her and dumping her body in Mabvuku sewage ponds.
Zhantali has confessed to another 10 murders that occurred in Marondera but in November 2022, Zhantali’s first murder trial was off to a false start after he exhibited strange behaviour which prompted Justice Roger Manyangadze to order that he be admitted to the Chikurubi Maximum Psychiatric Unit.
