In a shocking development, the courts have granted Lisani Nleya (45) bail pending a review by a mental institution. Nleya is accused of the brutal murders of his elderly parents, Nicholas Kenny Nleya (83) and Margaret Nleya (76), from Empandeni in Mangwe District, Matabeleland South.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the gruesome nature of the alleged crimes and Nleya’s unusual circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Nleya was reportedly arrested at a prophet’s house in Bulawayo after sneaking back into the country from South Africa.
During police interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the killings, which took place at Mzaza Village in Empandeni. Disturbingly, Nleya did not attend his parents’ funeral and was said to have last communicated with his family before the tragic events unfolded.
The Nleyas, both retired teachers from the nearby Catholic-run Empandeni Primary School, were well-respected members of the community and devout followers of the Roman Catholic Church.
The brutal nature of the crime has shocked the local community.
The court’s decision to grant bail, pending a mental health review, underscores the complexity surrounding Nleya’s state of mind at the time of the alleged offenses.
