Cousins detain and rape 13 year-old girl

TWO cousins from Lupane have been arrested for rape after they allegedly detained a 13-year-old girl for three days and took turns to rape her.

The cousins John Mpofu (20) and Nkosiyapha Sibanda (26) live at separate homesteads in Sentethe village under Chief Mabhikwa. The girl who cannot be identified to protect her, also resides in the same village.

Allegations are that last Sunday, Mpofu forcibly took the complainant to his home where he locked her up in a bedroom hut. He allegedly detained and raped her three times over the three days that he detained her.

The girl managed to escape on the third day last Tuesday and on her way home she met Sibanda who forcibly took her to his place while questioning her how she had escaped from Mpofu’s home.

Upon arrival at home, Sibanda allegedly took the complainant to his bedroom hut where he forcibly had sexual intercourse with her. The girl was rescued by her relatives who found her at Sibanda’s place during a search and reported the matter to the police.

Mpofu and Sibanda were not formally charged with rape when they separately appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Mr Ndumo Masuku on Friday. The duo was remanded in custody to 9 September and advised to apply to the High Court for bail. Mr Clive Gumbo prosecuted.
