Cover school sports, journalists urged

Sikhumbuzo Moyo Senior Sports Reporter
THE Provincial Education Director for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Dan Moyo has challenged local media to cover schools sports which can motivate the youth to go professional. Giving a vote of thanks at a sports indaba called by the Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Minister Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo in consultation with the City’s Sport Development Committee on Thursday, Moyo said it was imperative that the media took a keen interest in schools sports and any school head barring the media from covering such events was ill-advised.

He however called for truthful coverage of the schools’ sporting events.

“You guys are free to visit any of our schools and cover their sporting programmes. It will not be proper for any head to stop you from doing that. We have no policy like that but make sure what you write is the truth,” said Moyo.

His remarks come after concerns were raised during the same meeting that some school heads in Bulawayo were refusing to entertain journalists when they inquire about sporting activities at their respective schools.

Some heads would refer reporters to Moyo’s office even for non-policy issues like inter-house competitions.

The situation is however, different with other provinces especially those that have tasted the success of their athletes at national, regional and international competitions.
