The Covid-19 vaccination programme has gradually gained momentum in the Beitbridge district where 61 percent of the eligible population has been fully-vaccinated with the first and second jabs.

The Government has set a target herd immunity of 26 000 people in the country’s southern border town.

According to the latest Ministry of Health and Child Care report, a total of 16 008 people had received both the first and second jabs by October 1, since the start of the Extended Programme on Immunisation (EPI).

A further 25 159 have been inoculated with the first jabs, translating to 96 percent of the target.

The report covers the period September 25 and October 1.

“As of October 1, the district has now recorded 2177 cases and 34 local deaths, and a total of 25 159 have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination while 16 008 have had both doses,” read part of the report.

During the same week under review, a total of 131 new cases and zero deaths were recorded.

Chief director in the Ministry of Health and Child Care Dr Maxwell Hove said that recently border towns were among the high-risk areas for new Covid-19 infections due to the prevalence of cross-border related businesses.

He said immunising those in such areas, will help protect the communities and also open up economic activities in such towns.
