Sungura supremo Mark Ngwazi says the prolonged Covid-19 lockdowns have taken a toll on his career.
So dire is the “Chamugwegwedu” hitmaker’s predicament that he cannot even fund the recording of his next album.
“We get much of our revenue from live shows and since last year we were not performing. As a result, we exhausted all our savings and even extended begging bowls,” he said.
Ngwazi is considered one of the serious contenders to sungura music throne. His song “Taurai Madzoka” caused waves within and outside borders. He has other pulsating tracks such as “Tisazokanganwa”, “Time Pusher”, “Take Nemakonzo” and “Makwikwi” that are popular among his followers.
Currently, he is trying to record two new albums — “Bhazi haritsike ari mugomo” and “Master of Disaster”.
“Just like my fellow musicians, I am faced with serious financial constraints. I cannot go to the studio to record and release my new songs. I have composed and fine-tuned everything, but I do not have funds to finalise the projects,” lamented Ngwazi.
He fears for the worst and is now seeking assistance.
“Sponsors can help me out. If I continue on this path, I do not think I will be able to release new material anytime soon.”
However, Ngwazi said he hopes the Covid-19 situation will continue to improve so that they can conduct shows.
The Njanja Express frontman is billed to tour Chipinge next month.
His first gig will be held on November 5 in Checheche.
