IN a disturbing incident, a 37-year-old man from Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo was arrested for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl.
The matter came to light when the alleged paedophile, Shelby Matthew Mapungwana, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate, Shingi Mutiro facing one count of rape and one count of aggravated indecent assault.
Mapungwana pleaded not guilty to both charges and was remanded in custody to September 6 for continuation of trial.
Circumstances are that on August 5, 2024 at around 3 pm the accused called the victim whose name is not mentioned for ethical reasons to where he was, under the pretext that he wanted to buy her snacks.
The unsuspecting minor girl came and the accused then took her to a nearby bushy area where he removed her pant and lowered his pair of trousers and proceeded to rape her.
The court further heard that after the rape, the accused then went on to insert his tongue into the victim’s private parts.
The matter came to light when the victim ran away and narrated the ordeal to her mother who then reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused.
In his defence, the accused stated that he did not know the victim or her mother and that he had spent the whole day at his residence at the time of the alleged incident.
