Bulawayo-based Mothers of Special Heroes Trust (Mosh, an organisation dedicated to assisting, empowering, educating, and supporting mothers of children with neurological disabilities, has enlisted the creative talents of Trevor Mawaka and Greatjoy “Hlats” Hlatshwayo for an upcoming disability awareness expo on March 23.
The expo slated for Belgravia Sports Club in Harare, aims to educate the public on managing various neurological disorders such as epilepsy, autism, cerebral palsy, Peripheral, Downs, and Rett Syndromes, Spina Bifida and brain tumours. Additionally, it seeks to provide support for mothers caring for children with these conditions.
It will be in line with Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) ,observed annually in March. The theme for DDAM is “A World of Opportunities”, focusing on celebrating people and working together to overcome obstacles.
Greatjoy Hlats, an actor and musician designated as Mosh’s brand ambassador, emphasised the need to celebrate women caring for children with neurological disorders. He acknowledged the unique challenges these mothers face daily, highlighting Mosh’s commitment to changing the narrative and providing a support system for these courageous women. “The journey of mothers caring for children with neurological disabilities demands immense strength and resilience. Their daily routines differ significantly from those of other mothers, as they navigate through unique challenges. However, Mosh is dedicated to changing the narrative and establishing a robust support system for these courageous women,” he emphasised.

Chantelle Shangare, Mosh founder and managing director, described Mosh as a humanitarian organisation, focused on promoting human welfare and ensuring that every mother and child receives the life they deserve. “In a landscape where NGOs are scarce, Mosh strives to provide these special heroes and their mothers with an opportunity for a fulfilling life,” Shangare affirmed.
Recognising the therapeutic benefits of art and music for children with neurological disabilities, Mosh runs an Art Club ,where children can express their creativity. Artwork created by club members will be auctioned during the event.
Moreover, under the guidance of the skilled music director, Mawaka, Mosh has initiated a music programme titled the “All Abilities Choir”. This programme is set to debut its inaugural single and video, “Themba lami”, during a fundraising dinner on the same evening.
Mawaka shared that the song conveys a message of hope amid adversity. The accompanying video, filmed in Nkulumane and Burnside, features Greatjoy Hlats and the 2024 National Arts Merit Awards Best Actress recipient, Bonakele Agnes Ncube.
Known for producing exceptional chorale groups, Mawaka acknowledged the challenges and excitement of working with children with neurological disorders. “Collaborating with these heroes has presented its challenges but has also been incredibly exciting. Many of them have speech impairments, but I admire the determination and passion they consistently demonstrate.
“It becomes truly worthwhile when you have a group that is so dedicated,” expressed Mawaka.
Mawaka is no stranger to producing exceptional chorale groups, which include Charleston School and Kenyan Sawa Children’s Choirs.
Individuals with neurological disorders have defied the odds, excelling in various artistic careers. Notable examples, include the late musician and actor Terry G, diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, and songstress Chipo Muchegwa, born without hands and legs, relying on a wheelchair for mobility. – Follow on Twitter -@MbuleloMpofu
