The apple does not fall far from a tree. I am the daughter of guitarist, songwriter and producer Clive Mono Mukundu. My name is Tariro Nyasha Mukundu.
I am into painting and graphic designing. I designed my dad’s latest album sleeve. Art has always been a part of my life. As a young child I was first interested in colouring books, then I started doing my own art works at a very early age then as I grew older I started painting and have scooped several arts awards at school. I drew a number of portraits, I had one of my dad, then Carlos Santana and Jane Zangi from Zambia.
I try to use some knowledge which I got in junior school and I cannot say I am a professional painter because didn’t learn much about painting.
My parents bought a computer then I used it as a stepping stone to develop my art skills to graphic designing. I have been currently designing album covers and have done a number for some of musicians who are my dad’s studio clients.
I am also the one who designed my dad’s latest album Gwenyagitare’s cover and my future plans are venturing into the animation industry which is what I am perfecting now.
I owe everything that I have achieved so far to my parents who have been very supportive from day one. When I told them that I had a passion for art they just gave me the support that I needed and I wish all parents would do the same because other children end up failing in life not because they are failures but because their parents chose a career for them. Children must live their dreams not any other person’s.
As children we do not what to disappoint our parents and at the end of the day we end up doing what our parents want us to do and we fail because we have done something that is not in us but only to please our parents.
My brother Takakunda Mukundu, a Form Four student at Prince Edward is doing great in the music circles as he is now part of Gary Tight’s band. Like our dad he plays the lead guitar.
This is Tariro’s story as told to Cool Lifestyle writer Sophia Chese.
