THE police sub-aqua unit in Masvingo has recovered a leg and ribs of a 30-year-old Chiredzi man who was killed by a crocodile during a fishing expedition at Chegwite Dam. Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Peter Zhanero said Danford Kokera’s remains were recovered on Monday and taken to Chiredzi Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
“I confirm that police with the help of the sub-aqua unit recovered Kokera’s remains yesterday (Monday). The remains comprise a left leg and ribs from the left side only. The other remains are yet to be recovered,” he said.
Kokera was attacked by a crocodile on Saturday around 10AM while fishing with Kudakwashe Chitsvari, 63, of Plot 390, Scort Block, Moses Tinarwo, 60, Farm Number 6, Pardon Mujakachi, 32, of 239 Chipimbi, AFM Church Pastor Obert Mudawose, 31, of Scort Block and Emmanuel Chikwavaire, 28, of the same address.
Chief Insp Zhanero said Kokera and Chikwavaire went to one side of the dam, leaving the other four on the opposite side.
During fishing, Kokera caught a bream and while he was trying to put his catch into a bag, a crocodile pounced on him.
The reptile splashed water on the unsuspecting victim before attacking and dragging Kokera deep into the water.
His friends watched helplessly as Kokera was devoured by the crocodile while Chikwavaire tried in vain to throw stones at the reptile.
