A fishing trip turned tragic in Binga after a woman was attacked and killed by a crocodile while fishing in the Zambezi River on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred at a fishing spot popularly known as Ambush Alley along the Zambezi River in Binga.
Sources close to the matter said the woman was fishing with a neighbour in shallow water when the crocodile suddenly emerged and attacked her before dragging her into deeper waters.
Her companion screamed for help, attracting nearby fishermen who rushed to the scene. The fishermen reportedly threw stones in the direction of the crocodile in an effort to force it to release the woman.
“The crocodile later left the body near some reeds after failing to pull it further into the water,” said a source.
One of the fishermen then managed to retrieve the body from the river before family members and authorities were informed.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm that a woman died after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing in the Zambezi River in Binga,” said Insp Banda.
He urged communities living near water bodies to exercise extreme caution, saying cases of crocodile attacks were increasing in the area.
“We continue to urge fishermen and members of the public to remain vigilant when fishing or carrying out activities near rivers and dams. People should avoid entering waters known to have crocodiles, especially alone,” he said.
The body was taken to Binga District Hospital mortuary while investigations continue.
