A fishing expedition ended in tragedy for a 30-year-old Masvingo man who was attacked and killed by a crocodile while fishing at Chegwite Dam on Saturday, police confirmed.
Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Peter Zhanero said Danford Kokera’s remains were yet to be found since the attack at about 5PM on Saturday.

“I confirm receiving a report to the effect that a man was attacked by a crocodile while fishing in the company of other four men in Mkwasine, Chiredzi. His body has not been recovered and police investigations are in progress,” said Chief Insp Zhanero.

He said on the fateful day, Kokera went fishing at Chegwite Dam in the company of Kudakwashe Chitsvari, 63, of Plot 390, Scort Block, Moses Tinarwo, 60, Farm Number 6, Pardon Mujakachi, 32, of 239 Chipimbi, AFM Church Pastor, Obert Mudawose, 31 of Scort Block and Emmanuel Chikwavaire, 28  of the same address.

Chief Insp Zhanero said upon reaching the dam, Kokera and Chikwavaire went to one side of the dam while the other four got to the other side.

During fishing, Kokera caught a bream while on the edge of the dam and he took a fishing bag preparing to put his catch inside.
“While putting the fish in the bag, a crocodile emerged from deep waters and splashed water before pouncing on him. It then dragged him deep into the waters in the watchful eye of Chikwavaire,” said Chief Insp  Zhanero.

He said Chikwavaire raised alarm and threw stones at the reptile that kept pulling Kokera to the middle of the dam.
“Chikwavaire kept on throwing stones and he hit the crocodile on its back and the reptile got under the water. The other four who were on the other side of the dam arrived and tried in vain to scare the crocodile so that it could release their colleague,” said Chief Supt Zhanero.
Mujakachi then phoned someone to report the matter to Mkwasine police who attended the scene.

Chief Supt Zhanero said the police sub-aqua unit was informed about the incident and efforts were underway to look for the man’s remains.
Recently a 13-year-old boy from Batiti Village in Chief Sengwe area, Chikombedzi, was killed by a crocodile while swimming with his friends in Mwenezi River.

His remains have not yet been found.
