Crystal meth abuse claims life of two-month-old baby in Mabutweni

Bongani Ndlovu, Deputy Echo Editor

A TWO-MONTH-OLD baby boy from Mabutweni suburb in Bulawayo died on Monday morning after his mother allegedly breastfed him while under the influence of crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as “crystal meth” or “mutoriro”).

Bulawayo provincial police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of sudden death following the tragic incident, which occurred on November 3, 2025.

According to a police statement, the 22-year-old mother of the deceased reportedly took crystal meth together with a friend at around 9PM before breastfeeding her infant. Soon after, the two allegedly fell into a deep sleep.

“When the mother woke up around 9AM the following morning, she discovered that the child had no signs of life. A police report was then made,” said Bulawayo Deputy Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu.

The baby’s body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) mortuary for a post-mortem.

Assistant Inspector Ndlovu warned members of the public against the use of illicit drugs, saying substance abuse often leads to tragic consequences, impaired judgment, and negligence.

“We warn drug abusers that drug use impairs coordination and judgement leading to risky behaviours, negligence, accidents or crime. We also strongly warn those using and dealing in drugs that the long arm of the law will catch up with them,” she said.
