THE Zifa Central Soccer League (CSL) has re-introduced sub-committees that had been abolished. All sub-committees are chaired by board members except for the disciplinary committee, which is chaired by Gweru lawyer Reginald Chidawanyika. CSL board member for administration John Marima chairs the marketing committee, Charlton Moyo is in charge of finance and Pithius Shoko will chair the grounds and competition committee.
CSL chairman Stanley Chapeta said the new committees have been put in place to professionalise the league. “We want to have a business approach to the league and as such these committees, except the disciplinary one, which is independent, will carry out their mandate on behalf of the league and report to the board,” said Chapeta.
“This way, we want to ensure the league adheres to the best standards in whatever it does. As a league, we want to ensure that we secure sponsorship and become the most competitive second tier league in the country.”
The sub-committees were done away with following the suspension of former CSL chairman Patrick Hokonya in 2011.
Chapeta said the CSL season is set to kick-off this Saturday, with 16 teams instead of 18 as Jessie Mine and Nkayi United haven’t paid affiliation fees yet.
He also said they are tying up “loose ends” on the league’s sponsorship package and promised that the CSL would be branded in May.
“We’ve already presented our budget to the potential sponsor and there are some loose ends which we’re tying up and I’m confident by May a sponsorship package would be unveiled to the clubs,” he said.
