CUBA has condemned the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran and said the actions threaten regional and international peace and security.

In a statement, the Cuban government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the alleged attacks violated Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and constituted a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

“Cuba condemns in the strongest terms the attacks perpetrated on February 28 by the United States and Israel, which violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” read the statement.

Cuba said the development undermined ongoing diplomatic efforts relating to Iran’s nuclear programme and described the aggression as irresponsible and deliberate.

“This irresponsible and deliberate aggression boycotts, for the second time, the efforts of international diplomacy in relation to the nuclear issue, which had been under negotiation,” reads the statement.

Cuba said the actions by Washington and Tel Aviv once again endanger regional and international peace, stability and security, adding that the effects were already being felt in the Middle East.

Cuba has joined international calls for an immediate halt to the attacks, which it said had caused an unknown number of civilian casualties, including children and warned against any escalation of the conflict.

It said the use of military force driven by hegemonic interests could drag other countries in the region into the conflict with unpredictable consequences.

Cuba also called for the preservation of good neighbourliness between Iran and Arab States as a delicate moment.

The Caribbean nation urged strict respect for the principles of international law and the UN Charter, particularly sovereign equality of States, non-interference in internal affairs, the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Cuba called on the UN Security Council to exercise its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security and urged the UN General Assembly to mobilise the international community to restore peace with urgency and determination.
