Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla is expected in the country on Friday on a three-day visit meant to strengthen bilateral relations between Havanna and Harare. A diplomat with the Cuban embassy Ms Tania Perez Xiques confirmed the visit in an interview on Tuesday.
“The purpose of the visit by Minister Parrilla is to reinforce the already existing cordial relationship between Cuba and Zimbabwe particularly in education and health sectors,” said Ms Xiques.
Minister Parrilla is expected to meet various government officials including Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Higher and Tertiary, Science and Technology Minister Olivia Muchena, Health and Child Care Minister David Parirenyatwa, among others.
“This is his first official visit to Zimbabwe and will tour the Heroes Acre on Saturday before taking a flight to South Africa late Sunday afternoon,” she said.
The Cuban delegation comprises Mr Angel Villa, Director of the Africa Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba and other senior officials.
Zimbabwe and Cuba enjoy cordial relations dating back to the days of the liberation struggle.
The cordial relations have seen Cuba sending medical personnel to Zimbabwe on a government-to -government arrangement in a move meant to bolster the country’s healthy sector.
The two countries are victims of illegal sanctions which have caused immense suffering to innocent people.
