THE Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Zimbabwe says there is an urgent need for international solidarity on the ongoing economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America on it, as the United Nations General Assembly prepares to address the issue for the 33rd time.

“This resolution receives almost unanimous support from UN members. The demand for the unconditional lifting of the embargo is almost universal,” said the embassy in a statement.

The embassy said that despite this, the US government had remained unwavering in its implementation of this cruel and illegal policy.

“After more than 60 years, the central objective of the blockade has not changed: to deteriorate the population’s standard of living, provoke dissatisfaction, despair, and irritation, as a means of fostering a social uprising that will lead to a change in the constitutional order freely chosen by our people,” it said.

The embassy said that Cuba’s unjustifiable continued inclusion on the arbitrary and unilateral list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism is dishonest and politically motivated.

“It represents one of the most impactful measures against our country, as it reinforces the deterrent and intimidating effects on third parties, and has increased the country risk.

“It caused serious difficulties for our operations in the banking and financial sector, international trade, access to financing, fuel purchases, access to suppliers of goods and inputs essential for economic development, and has discouraged foreign investment.”

The embassy said Cuba recognises and appreciates the international community’s ongoing and almost unanimous support for the efforts to end the blockade.

“In the current, particularly complex situation, we reiterate our gratitude for this valuable support and hope to once again count on the country’s vote in favour of our draft resolution,” it said.
