Indeed, there were a lot of talking points at Prince Edward School from fashion, hairstyles, food, celebrations, swag to style. As it has been always the norm since the festival started more than a decade ago, best teams which are regarded as “powerhouses” usually play on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the last day Saturday, possibly drawing multitudes of people. Monday, the first day of the event, saw a small crowd turning up, but the interesting thing was the girls rugby match which lived up to expectations.
The second day of the Cottco Schools Rugby Festival was filled with excitement and quality rugby as well as humiliation for local teams that failed to outshine visiting teams from Namibia and South Africa.
The visiting sides Windhoek Technical from Namibia and St Martin’s from South Africa, were full of energy and displayed quality games, but it was only St Martin’s who faced a better Hillcrest side on Thursday.
It was all glitz and glamour from Prince Edward’s Jubilee fields where most power- houses played their first and second successive matches in front of an amazing crowd.
Sebastian Garikai, event organiser, hailed all schools that participated this year ahead of the Super 80 rugby season to follow.
“We had an amazing run this year, the turnout and the overall performance complemented very well with our theme ‘Everyone is a winner’.
“It was not a one-sided affair as others would want to suggest. This year we had double celebration, as we made sure the event was a success. We also had to marvel at 15 years under the sponsorship of the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe,” said Garikai.
Girls teams that played this year did not disappoint as some of the teams were making their debut appearance at the tourney.
However, Petra High School boys team appeared to be the biggest losers of the event losing 59-0 to Peterhouse after the opening humiliation 3-52 to visiting Namibian team Windhoek Technical on Tuesday.
The mood and atmosphere has been good this year despite a low turnout during the morning games.
The newly introduced rule which saw some of the games played under floodlights was fairly received by some of the teams.

Reigning league champions St George’s is on top the ladder followed by St John’s College who performed well on Thursday, visiting Namibian Windhoek was also impressive and comfortably sit on third position, the host Prince Edward is in fourth position while Churchill is fifth ahead of Falcon, Eaglesvale and Lomagundi.
