Curtain comes down on Goko tourney

The past three weeks have seen ball games entertainment explode in the communities hosting the Goko Trophy and on 26 July 2014, the finals will be held at Goko Primary School — a fitting venue as the late philanthropist and traditional leader once taught at the school.

From 12 participating schools to the remaining two finalists in both soccer and netball means that the road to the final was by any means a walk in the park.

Therefore, Maunganidze boys’ soccer team fight for the gold medal against Mutema.

On the other hand, Maxwell Chaya, the co-ordinator, added that Bangwe School netball team will meet Manesa School at the same venue.

Mouth-watering clashes are on the cards at Goko as the curtain comes down on the tournament that has kept fans on the edge of their seats these past weeks.

The defending soccer champions in the secondary school arena, Goko High School, kept themselves in the hunt for a repeat of last year’s feat over the weekend.

The champions were in a no-nonsense mood when they walloped hapless Chipinda Secondary School 4-0 and made light work of a spirited Musani Secondary School 2-1 at Goko grounds.

Shepherd Matsikure and Jabulani Mabuto were the heroes of the Goko soccer team as they humiliated the other two contestants. So dominant were Goko that many pundits think they are the odds-on favourites to retain the trophy.

In the girls section, Musani Secondary School are on course to keep the trophy for a second time after seeing off the weak challenges of Goko and Chipinda netball teams 18-16 and 21-5 respectively.

The girls showed their prowess in an emphatic fashion.

This weekend is one that will separate the boys from men, as it were.  To the Goko and surrounding community, this Saturday provides an opportunity to watch the finest footballers and netball players the constituency can offer, right at their doorsteps.

Maxwell Chaya has promised massive entertainment that includes the favourite of many, muchongoyo, chimyambera and other forms.

It will be a day to remember.
Those stars must not end there but continue to shine as we await a day when Zimbabwe will be represented in the soccer and netball world cups. Our elders have a saying, nzombe huru yakabva mukurerwa. With that it is proper for us to say, let the action begin.

Chiedza Beta, the District Education Officer for Chipinge, will grace the occasion as the guest of honour while the MP, Cde Adam Chimwamurombe, is expected to be part of the dignitaries as the community celebrates the life of Solomon Goko.
