THE curtain came down on the Highfield West Social League on Sunday with Soccer Aid FC being crowned champions.

They finished two points clear of second-placed Tower Light FC.

This was the 12-team league’s first season.

Speaking to H-Metro, the league’s patron, Zunde Chibundu, said its existence has had a positive impact on society.

“We have looked at the overall impact and found that our league has benefited society in different ways.

“The schools we use as venues get money per week in ground rentals, which they have also used to repair damaged precast walls,” he said.

“Furthermore, we are there to work hand in hand with the Government in fighting drug and substance abuse by youths, as they will be occupied during the weekends.”

Chibundu said their league was a platform for developing talent for professional leagues.

“Some players who started with us are now playing in Division 1 and 2.

“Above all, we are there to unite people through sport,” he said.

Chibundu appealed for sponsorship from the corporate world and individuals interested in junior football development.

“Tumelo Foundation sponsored a tournament in August and we are appealing to businesspeople to help us financially to achieve our goals of bringing Highfield West onto the Zimbabwean football map by unearthing more young talent,” he said.
