FIVE final students from Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) held a group exhibition on Saturday aimed at showcasing their knowledge of art.
The two-day exhibition which ran from May 17 to 19 was held at Pikicha Gallery at Helensvale shopping centre in Borrowdale.
Each one of the students had their own theme.
In an interview with one of the students, Talent Mashizha said, they combined forces to achieve their interest.
“The exhibition was quite successful as it paved the way for the art world public to know about these great talents. The guest was Silenkosi Moyo, regional director of national gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.
“We intend to take art and design to greater heights. I am a design devotee who specialises in interior and furniture design and it’s my unique strength.
“Mine was Kwatakabva mitunhu which means coming a long way, because of the journey I took since first year, my struggles and triumphs.
“The theme is a Shona phrase which means coming a long way. This explains the journey that the designer went through.
“From having to learn how to use a pencil, shading skills let alone creating things from scratch.
“It really was not an easy road. More and more understanding came through the lenient lecturers, supportive family and friends explains the designer.”
Talent said at first it was hard to create a meaningful design or drawing.
“Some students would guffaw at my work, discouraging me not to proceed with the industrial design programme. At one point, I called it quits, but it later was denied by the dean of the art department.
“But I had to brace myself against all odds.”
Other students who exhibited were Lydia Molai, whose exhibition ran under the theme Mavambo which means the beginning.
“Lydia chose this theme because it speaks of the beginning of her journey as an industrial designer as she was previously known as a visual artist.
“Samuel Sifani had his theme, diversity which showed different designs, products and paintings to show his skill.
“Tinashe Brighton Jakarasi ran with the theme Pieces and it focused on bringing all pieces of his work from the first year.
“Finally Kudakwashe Morgan Chisango’s theme was Redefinition. It was more about recycling material to come up with new products.”
