The money, which was stashed in an envelope, was on the carrier when the robbers pounced on him at around 11 am at the intersection of Fifth Street and Livingstone Avenue.
No arrests have been made while police investigations continue.
Sources close to the investigations yesterday said the messenger had been sent to deposit clients’ money at different banks in the city centre.
They said he stashed the US$9 000 in an envelop and carried it on his bicycle. The robbers were driving a silver Nissan Sunny without a registration number.
They blocked the messenger’s way whereupon a robber on the passenger seat produced a pistol and ordered the cyclist to comply with their orders. The messenger reportedly jumped off the bicycle and fled, leaving the money.
The robbers took the money and drove off.
A report was made at Fife Avenue Police Base.
“We received such a report and we are still investigating the case,” CID spokesperson Detective Inspector Augustine Zimbili said yesterday.
He said the case had since been referred to their specialised section which deals with such matters.
“I would like to urge those people who deal in large sums of money to ensure that they put mechanisms to ensure the security of their cash especially when in transit,” Detective Insp Zimbili.
