Cyclone Idai which ravaged parts of the country killing at least 80 people in Manicaland Province, hit Chirumanzu District in the Midlands Province where over 20 families were left homeless and counting loses.
In an interview, Midlands provincial administrator Mr Abiot Maronge said Churumanzu District Department of Civil Protection was on the ground in the area to assess the extent of the damage.
He, however, said there were no lives lost due to Cyclone Idai in the province.
“As a province, we only have one district which was affected by the devastating Cyclone Idai, which is Chirumanzu.
‘‘We got information that the Cyclone Idai which hit Manicaland landed in Chirumanzu where several homesteads were destroyed and over 20 families in various wards were displaced,” he said.
Mr Maronge said there were no deaths and injuries recorded.
“Teams are on the ground. What I can confirm is that we did not record any deaths or injuries as a result of Cyclone Idai in the affected district.
‘‘What the Civil Protect on Unit is doing at the moment is to quantify the extent of damage so that we know the kind of help that we need to mobilise,” he said.
Mr Maronge appealed for assistance from the corporate world in terms of food and shelter for the affected families.
“What is needed at the moment are tents for temporary shelter to the affected families.
‘‘There is also need for food assistance since most of them had their food stocks destroyed in the floods,” he said.
