Nyatanga calls time on ZNSSA presidency

ZIMBABWE Soccer Supporters Association president, Eddie “Mboma” Nyatanga, has finally decided to step down.

His decision came after ZNSSA and the Friends of the Warriors ended years of acrimony by agreeing to work together for the good of the game.

Nyatanga said he believes the ZNSSA leadership now needs some younger people who have the energy to mobilise the fans across the country.

The supporters group are currently on a drive to ensure fans fill the National Sports Stadium on Sunday when the Warriors take on Congo in their final 2019 AFCON qualifier.

Nyatanga, who will now take a ceremonial role as the founding president of ZNSSA, said he was leaving the association a happy man.

“I have seen it proper to hand over the presidency to some young fellows whom I have travelled the journey with for a long time so that they take the national team supporters group to another level,’’ said Nyatanga.

“I have been at the helm for quite a long time and I think I have run my race with distinction.

“We are all rallying behind one cause, which is the national flag, and I don’t think there is need to have many factions.

“I also believe it’s good to retire while people still want you and the environment is now right for me to step aside, especially now that the fans are speaking with one voice.

“I also want to thank my colleagues from the Friends of the Warriors for accepting that we should work together.’’

ZNSSA held a function in Harare yesterday which was also addressed by ZIFA Northern Region boss Willard Manyengavana.

New ZNSSA president, Edward Chimedza, said he was happy to take over when the factions have realised they can work together.

“We have decided to come together as Zimbabweans to fight for one good cause and we are happy to be mobilising support for our team together rather than to be seen as opponents,’’ he said.

“We are grateful that all the associations have heard the call to unite by the ZIFA president and we hope we will turn up in our numbers on Sunday.’’
