THE Hwange FC end of year awards that that were supposed to be held at the Hwange Golf Club on Tuesday night were postponed at the 11th hour because of a yet to be explained reason.
Hwange won the sole ticket to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League after only one season in the second tier Zifa Southern Region Division One League and just missed the chance to end the season with a league and cup double after being pipped 1-0 by ambitious Talen Vision in the Landa John Nkomo Memorial Trophy at Luveve Stadium last Sunday.
Chipangano, who fielded a number of fringe players in the final, succumbed to a McCarthy Dube second half goal.
“Please be advised that the awards ceremony has been postponed to a later date,” said the company in a statement to various stakeholders on Tuesday.
The awards would have seen deserving players walking away with the Golden Boot, the Players’ Player of the Year, the Player of the Year as well as a special accolade to a supporter.
This is the second time that a major sporting event has been cancelled at the last minute by the coal mining giant, having postponed the annual and internationally recognised Hwange Golf Championship in October this year.
Despite the surprise developments, the coal mining company has continued to assure Hwange FC supporters and partners that it has no intention of abandoning the team as it prepares for life in the Premiership.
The company was recently put under administration due to serious viability challenges that have seen it failing to meet some of its major financial obligations.
