WHILE their counterparts are crying foul over the corporate sectoras a?reluctancea? to partner their respective leagues, the Zifa Southern Region has underlined its status as arguably the best run Division One league by retaining sponsors to bankroll two knockout tournaments.
The country has four Division One leagues, the Zifa Southern, Northern, Central and Eastern Regions.
And the good thing is that the Liquor Hub John Landa Nkomo Knockout Tournament is back in the bag for the 2017 season.
While eight teams competed in the inaugural 2016 edition, four teams will battle it out for honours this year.
The tournament celebrates the life of the late Vice-President John Landa Nkomo and is sponsored by businessman Raj Modi through his company Liquor Hub Wholesalers.
a?The teams have been reduced to four because the sponsor will be also bankrolling the Soccer Star of the Year awards that will be held at the end of the season. The top four teams at the end of the season will automatically qualify for the tournament,a? said league chairman Musa Mandaza.
In the same week that the league celebrated sealing the Liquor Hub John Landa Nkomo Knockout Tournament, news filtered in that another cup knockout sponsor was ready to put pen to paper.
a?A revised Trukump Enterprises Invitational Tournament featuring eight teams will also be played at the end of the season. These are very interesting times for us as a league because our sponsors have again shown faith in the Zifa Southern Region,a? said Mandaza.
In addition to the two knockout tournaments, the Zifa Southern Region also boasts of another sponsor a Nokel Security a which bankrolls the monthly top goal scorer award to the tune of $200.
