He said this at the installation of Chief Vusumuzi Nicodmus Mabhikwa in Jotsholo, Lupane.
Dr Chombo, who was satirical in his remarks, said Dr Dabengwa should find another name for his breakaway party than using the name Zapu, a party that was led by National Hero Vice-President Dr Joshua Nkomo, who was also known as Father Zimbabwe.
Dr Chombo made his remarks before King Lobengula’s descendant, Peter Zwide Kalanga Khumalo, Dr Dabengwa himself, the president of the Chiefs Council, Fortune Charumbira and his deputy Chief Mtshane Khumalo of Bubi, Bubi Senator Lot Mbambo, Lupane North West MP Martin Khumalo, Lupane State University acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Maclean Bhala and Matabeleland North Governor Thokozile Mathuthu and Provincial Administrator Ms Latiso Dlamini.
“We have Dr Dabengwa here with his Zapu. But the problem is that Dr Dabengwa hijacked the name of Dr Nkomo’s party, Zapu. We want to see what will happen between his Zapu and us. Dr Dabengwa should look for another name for his party,” said Dr Chombo drawing laughter from the huge crowd.
“We are moving towards elections and we want to see what will happen between him and us. Dr Dabengwa, we will meet at work.”
Contacted for comment Dr Dabengwa scoffed at the attack and said he was not taking it seriously as it came from a young man who lacked understanding.
“I am not offended at all as this is just the talk of a young man who does not know the history of Zapu. Uyawumana nje. People know that Zanu came from Zapu and he was at school at that time. He joined Zanu and does not know anything about Zapu,” Dr Dabengwa said.
Dr Dabengwa gave the new chief a heifer as a gift while Minister Chombo gave out $200 and Governor Mathuthu presented him with $50.
