A Chinhoyi man accidentally ran over and killed his 18-month-old daughter while reversing his vehicle at home recently.

McDonald Kufahakutiziki (42) of Golf Course suburb Chinhoyi ran over his toddler, said Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Margaret Chitove, who set the time of the accident at around 9am last Thursday.

“Kufahakutiziki heard the screaming voice of an infant and upon disembarking, realised he had run over his daughter,” she said. Inspector Chitove said investigations into the accident were underway before urging drivers to exercise due diligence.

“We are still conducting investigations but at the same time, we want to encourage drivers to conduct thorough precautions before starting their vehicles. They should ensure that there is nothing behind and beneath their vehicles before taking off,” she said.

Meanwhile, to address road accidents involving students going to or from Chinhoyi University of Technology on foot, the Transport and Infrastructural Development Ministry has put in place rumble strips along the Harare-Chirundu Highway near the university to slow down traffic. Two students were hit by vehicles within a week in separate road accidents.
