JOHANNESBURG. — Advocate Dali Mpofu has resigned from the African National Congress after 33 years to join Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters, City Press reported yesterday. “Internal paralysis (in the ANC) is such that it’s a question of time before it renders itself irrelevant to the broader revolution,” Mpofu told the newspaper. He is currently at the Farlam Commission of Inquiry representing families of miners killed in a clash with police at Marikana last year.
The advocate told City Press that he believed “radical policies” were needed to help the poor.

“We have to accept that addressing the needs of those people has to be done at the expense of those who have, so that we can have the hope of achieving stability”.
Mpofu said that while he respected those who chose to stay with the ANC:

“. . . My only prediction is that in the fullness of time, they will see that they are just hanging on to the sentiment and the name,” said Mpofu.
ANC spokesperson Keith Khoza told the newspaper that Mpofu’s resignation confirmed suspicions that he had been “acting against the ANC in ways that projected the ANC negatively”.

“It is his choice if he feels he wants to join another party.
“We cannot comment on his views,” he told the newspaper.

Mpofu said he had no intention of putting aside his legal robes to become a full-time politician. — Sapa.
