DALOM Kids, Peacock and Matshikos, three groups that have always found more favour in Bulawayo than even in South Africa, their native country, are set to return on Saturday for a gig that will rekindle their long-standing romance with the City of Kings.

Founded by Dan Tshanda, the Dalom Stable has over the years provided the soundtrack for party life in Bulawayo, with the sound associated with the late disco king emerging as a sentimental favourite for many in the country’s second largest city, despite its waning popularity in Mzansi.

Tshanda, who died on January 5, 2019, aged 54, after suffering heart failure, was instrumental in popularising Splash music through his performances, recordings and work with numerous artists

On October 3, Splash makes its return to Bulawayo and bring together several artist associated with Tshanda and his Dalom Music brand.

The Bulawayo show will feature Dalom Kids, Peacock, Matshikos, Montana, Tafula, Sithembile Zungu and DJ Kalanga. The Splash contingent will be led by Splash Music matriarch Sylvia Tshanda, who took over the reins after her husband’s death.

A number of local artistes, including Gregory Ncube, Kucy Majucana, Bovas, DJ Tboy The King, DH Josh and DJ Kid Wicked, are also expected to perform. Ncube, the local organiser of the event, said the concert was aimed at honouring Tshanda’s contribution to Splash music and the opportunities he created for musicians across the region.

“This event is in memory of Dan Tshanda, who created the kind of music we love so much that we call Splash. We celebrate his time on earth with the love he showed us through his music, performances, stages and tours in Zimbabwe and across the globe.

“He was a legend who inspired many musicians to get into singing the genre. He also created employment for the youth and was well known for supporting many upcoming artistes under his wing. Through his music, many families survived. That’s why his memory will live forever in the hearts of his Splash fans,” said Ncube.

He said Splash music is deeply embedded in Bulawayo’s cultural fabric, making the city a natural choice for a concert commemorating Tshanda.

Ncube said the genre continued to resonate with audiences because of its relatable themes and its ability to bring people together.

“What makes Splash the heartbeat of our community is the message in the music. It speaks to the day-to-day lives of the people and the struggles we go through. It also gives people joy while connecting communities in times of hardship.

“Through Splash, we come together and become one because this is a joyful genre that takes people to the dance floor, no matter the situation,” said Ncube.

He said preparations for the concert were at an advanced stage, with the organisers putting final touches to ensure a memorable experience for fans.

He urged Splash music lovers to attend the concert in large numbers and celebrate Tshanda’s enduring musical legacy.

The visiting artistes are expected to arrive in Bulawayo today ahead of the show and will also meet fans at a local entertainment venue as part of a meet-and-greet programme.

“People must come in numbers for the show because this is all about celebrating Dan Tshanda. They should expect the best performances from a tight line-up of artistes who will take the stage,” said Ncube.
