Damaged schools rebuilt

the end of April.

The development sparked fears that some schools would fail to re-open for the second term but Government and some no-governmental organisations have since started to rehabilitate the worst affected schools. Some of the schools that suffered extensive damage are Chilonga primary and secondary schools, Muhlanguleni Primary school, Chibwedziva and several satellite schools in Chiredzi. Mwenezi Government High School was also damaged.

The estimated damage on the schools by the hailstorm was over US$1 million.
Masvingo provincial Governor and Resident Minister Titus Maluleke last week said the rehabilitation of the damaged schools was already underway. He said Government and its development partners were working together to rebuild the battered schools.

“Rehabilitation of about 10 schools is underway in Chiredzi and Mwenezi. Government and its development partners pooled resources together to rebuild the schools so that school children do not continue learning in the open. We are optimistic that within the next few months the rehabilitation process would have been completed.

The worst affected schools were satellite schools in resettlement areas where new structures have to be built to replace the battered ones but we are happy that there has not been any disruption of the school calendar in the affected areas,’’ said Governor Maluleke.
