THE Book Cafe hosted a fun-filled dance show on Saturday which brought to the fore the country’s top dancers and artists at an event dubbed “Dance Evolution Concert 2014”.The event, which was managed by talented dancer John Cole and Rahim Solomon, included Melody Musekiwa, Juveniles from Mutare, Desert Fox from Sunningdale, IDC (Kambuzuma), Faith Kanngausaru, Sabastian Mugondi and Freak Factory from Waterfalls.
Other dancers were Blessing Fire, Black/White from Waterfalls and Tinashe Dhokwani who is a deaf student from Danhiko Centre. The inaugural extravaganza was also graced by a host of celebrities including BaShupi, DJ Naida, Tererai Mugwadi, Hope Masike, Leonard Mapfumo, Ammara Brown, Roki, Pauline Gundidza, Victor D, Lady Thanda and upcoming jazz diva Thelma Kapisa.
“The dancers were all upcoming talents and my goal was to harness the full potential of the inner dancer within them as most of them had never performed in a show of such magnitude before.
“Many people respect the singers and players of musical instruments but they forget that the women and men who dance also make the entertainment more alluring,” said Cole after the show.
Dance is intimately linked to music and performance in traditional society, and this effort at promoting it at a contemporary level is commendable as it shows that it can be a genre which can stand on its own.
In Zimbabwe dance is a very spiritual and powerful tool that carries on traditions and chronicles the important events of the nation’s history and culture across all ethnic divides.
