The party, hosted by President Mugabe, ran under the theme, “Peace, Prosperity and Economic Empowerment for National Development”.
President Mugabe took the opportunity to meet and greet children. School representatives from 10 provinces including the Junior Parliament assembled at the City Sports Centre to showcase their talents.
The party proved worthwhile as not only the children celebrated the 33 years of country’s independence, they had a time to do speeches, poems, music and dance.
Masvingo province was the crowd favourite as they chanted their slogan in Karanga leaving many in stitches.
Guest artiste Jah Prayzah put up a scintillating performance belting out some tunes from his latest album. Some children also had a chance to meet and shake hands with President Mugabe.
Child President Tatenda Rusere said the most important thing for independence is to observe your freedom.
“I know we are born free, but we are happy that the country has seen 33 years of independence. I want to thank the parents and elders who fought for this country to be free,” he said.
Tatenda, who was clad in a black suit with matching tie, said it was the right time for children to prove that they can lead.
“Don’t ask what the nation can do, but what you can do for the nation. Through this independence we have been empowered and we have to use what we have to develop the nation. It is now the right time for children to take a lead because they are the future of tomorrow,” he said.
The Child President said it takes everyone to participate in nation-building.
“One thumb cannot kill a louse, but we have to gather as one and use our ideas to build a nation.”
Eighteen-year-old Mavis Marere from Matabeleland province could not hide her tears after a handshake with the President of Zimbabwe.
“I feel honoured and happy at the same time shaking the President’s hand.
“Seriously, this party is filled with pomp and fanfare. I came here to celebrate and I have managed to meet new friends thanks to the organisers of this party as this was my first time to be in Harare,” said.
The President’s daughter, Bona, took the opportunity to present a token of appreciation to all the 10 provinces.
Both junior and senior Cabinet officials graced the occasion.
The party lasted for eight hours which for many children was like a year of celebrations. For all the swag and bling that many claim to have, we have to remember that there were some gallant sons and daughters who fought for us to be free.
Lest we forget, Happy Independence Day.
