THE Lion Lager Activation Campus Nights finale was held on Saturday in the Harare Gardens with dancehall musicians King Shaddy, Sniper Storm and Winky D giving scintillating performances. There was high expectation for Shinsoman who despite his chart topper “Mawaya Waya” gave a rather subdued performance.
His biggest challenge was intermittent breaks halfway through the song. The only song that he performed for more than two minutes was “Mawaya Waya”, which was the crowd’s favourite.
On a night when every artiste was using a live band, Shinsoman took a gamble and used backtracks. However, he upped the tempo when he introduced a new dancehall chanter Killah T.
The Mbare-based chanter, who was making a cameo appearance, left many people yearning for more with his trademark “Popopopopo” signature tune.
However, King Shaddy, accompanied by a live band, gave a memorable performance that surpassed many people’s expectations.
The foul-mouthed chanter from Highfield started off with controversial songs such as “Baccosi” and “Chipanera”.
He then dished out his song of the moment “Machira Chete”.
The fast beat on the song endeared him tothe crowd. However, it was the song “Zimbabwean Style” that sent many fans, mostly students from the UZ, into a frenzy. The song is his own version of the hit song “Gangnam Style” by South Korean musician Psy.
Then came the self-styled soldier — Sniper Storm. The musician opened his act with the national anthem before bursting into “Masoja to the World” hit. Backed by a full band, Sniper performed a mix of his yesteryear and recent songs much to the delight of the crowd.Throughout his show, Sniper exhibited some well-choreographed dances that defied his physical stature.
Guilty for turning up on stage late, Winky D made up for his delinquency with a master class act. The fans had to endure an hour of waiting and thanks to the wheel spinners, DJ Smiley and Merciless, who were on the deck for keeping the crowd up on its feet.
However, when he finally appeared on stage, there was stampede as fans jostled to take a closer look of the Kambuzuma-born chanter who loves to call himself the Ninja President.
The musician went on to belt out his hit songs “Musarove Bigiman”, “Godo”, and “Mafirakureva” with fans singing along to every song.
