THE electrification of schools is important in the promotion of Information Communication Technology (ICT) from an early age in line with the new curriculum, an official has said.
Speaking at a “switching-on” ceremony at Dangare Primary School in Sakubva, Mutare last week, acting district schools inspector in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Mr Barnabas Njikizana said electricity opened the doors to the ICT world.
“The ICT world is important in the new curriculum from ECD and it increases the schools pass rate, since we have electricity (at Dangare Primary School’s library), now we can have access to the ICT world,” he said.
The ceremony was held following the electrification of the newly built library at the school, a project financed by local property developer Dr Nancy Saungweme. Speaking at the same event, Dr Saungweme said the initiative was part of her way to give back to the community she grew up in. Dr Saungweme financed the whole process of bringing electricity to the school. The project, which commenced in 2016, cost a little above $5 000.
“I noticed the library had no electricity and it touched me so I offered to provide electricity for the school library. It has not been easy to bring electricity to this place, we had drawbacks, but finally it is done. I realised the library was a priority to make a change in the school,” she said. She promised to help install ICT equipment in the library to help improve the pass rate.
Dangare Primary School headmistress Mrs Wendy Rukanda said the electrification of the library was a big development for the school.
“Because of the electricity that we have in our school library we will no longer have hot-sitting since our ECD and Grade 1 classes can also use the library,” she said.
She also expressed hope of improving the school’s pass rate from 96 percent to 100 percent.
