Dangarembga up for film award

Koschke, an official from Nyerai Films, the film was shot entirely in Tonga and is now competing for the Greater Nile award for the best film in the festival’s platinum mask of the famous King Tut Ankh Amon.
The film, which is a myriad of fantasy, fact and fiction, attracted a lot of controversy at its premiere during the 10th edition of IIFF last year and is set to take Zimbabwe cinema to new heights.
Koschke said the film takes a look at Nyaminyami, a river god that takes on a human form and proceeds to rid the land of the hunger that has allowed evil to run rampant.
“Set in the Zambezi Valley, the film incorporates certain aspects of Tonga culture. There is an overwhelming need to appreciate and embrace all things Zimbabwean and this film is the first step in the right direction,” Koschke said.
Dangarembga will be travelling to Egypt for the screening of her film during the festival which takes place from 21 to 28 February.
Koschke said the Luxor African Film Festival, which is run by the Independent Shabab Foundation, aims to consolidate filmmaking, capacity building and networking in Africa.
It partners with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Luxor Governorate and the pan-African cultural organisation, AfricAvenir.
Dangarembga has worked on other film projects that include Everyone’s Child, I want a Wedding Dress, Sharing Day, Growing Stronger, Nyaminyami Amaji Abulozi and Mother’s Day.
She is also a world-acclaimed novelist with books such as She No Longer Weeps and the Cambridge A-level set book Nervous Conditions.
