DANHAMOMBE and Churchill Boys High Schools were crowned champions of the 2014 National Association of School Heads at the handball inter-provincial Under-20 girls and boys’ tournament held in Bulawayo’s Northlea High School yesterdayIn the girls section Danhamombe beat defending champions, Harare Girls High School, 12-10 while Churchill defeated Rujeko High School 14-11.
The defending champions in the boys’ category JZ Moyo were emphatically thrashed by winners Churchill 13-2 in the semis before losing to Matopo 7-3 in the third place playoff.
Filabusi High School finished the tournament on position three and were given bronze medals for their efforts.
Each category had 12 schools drawn from the country’s 10 provinces with the host province having two representatives. NASH head-in-charge of handball Beauty Mtsambiwa said this year’s edition was impressive and all the schools exhibited the highest level of competition.
“Each year we are getting different teams and this is a sign that competition is increasing, there is no school that we can say are the favourites to win the title, the competition is unpredictable,” she said.
Mtsambiwa said if funds permitted they would have the handball competitions every term in order to keep the athletes active throughout the year.
