IN-FORM golfer, Darlington Chikanyambidze finished the opening round of the 2025 World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) at Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore as the highest placed Zimbabwean on Wednesday.
Chikanyambidze, who has been in red-hot form on the local circuit, marked his Eisenhower Trophy debut with a three-over-par 75, leaving him tied for position 67, 10 strokes behind overnight leader Hiroshi Hirahara Tai of Singapore.
Fourteen year old Munesu Chimhini and Elton Zulu opened the world’s premier amateur team championship with scores of eight-over-par 80 and 11-over-par 83 respectively. Chimhini is in position 103 while Zulu is on 107.
On the team leaderboard, Zimbabwe sit in position 35, second from bottom, with a team score of 11-over-par 155. The team total is calculated using the best two individual scores each round. Chikanyambidze and Chimhini’s scores counted for round one.
Chikanyambidze’s round featured one birdie, on the par-four second hole. He dropped shots on holes number four, six, 14 and 15.
Zimbabwe is one of the three African countries competing at the WATC alongside South Africa and Morocco. South Africa are in second place on five-under-par 139, just two shots behind leaders Mexico. – @brandon_malvin
