The Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe is in Gweru, where he is engaging with traditional leaders, councillors, town clerks and senior Government officials from the Midlands Province.
The Minister is expected to have discussions that will focus on governance, accountability, and service delivery in line with Vision 2030.
For the Vision to be achieved, there is a need for integrity and teamwork of local authorities and traditional leadership.
In his last engagement in Mashonaland Central, Minister Garwe said councils must not operate as personal enterprises but as institutions entrusted with public resources to deliver essential services.
He hinted that some executives are administering councils as if they are personal tuckshops adding that proceeds from the sale of stands are being abused, leaving residents with poor roads, unreliable water supply and inadequate infrastructure.
The Minister also raised alarm over the spread of illegal land sales, often referred to as “Masabhuku deals” which he said are a serious threat to orderly settlement planning.
