BARONS Motor Spares’ Darren Winterboer leaves Bulawayo today for South Africa where he is hopeful to continue shining on that country’s motor racing scene. He is due to take part in two events at the weekend at Zwartkops just outside Pretoria. A five-time Three Hour Endurance champion who has scooped six index prizes since he took to the sport in 1994, Winterboer, 41, will take part in the Extreme Motoring Festival. He will compete in two categories.
“I’m prepared. I’m feeling confident as long as there won’t be any mechanical issues.
“I’ve done some fitness training by cycling around Bulawayo ahead of the competition,” said Winterboer.
Also a winner of five championships in circuit racing and one karting, Winterboer will be taking part in the Extreme Super Car category and will drive his BMW 335 in the BMW Series.
“I’ll be driving the same vehicle as last time and I look forward to the Zwartkops Circuit races,” he said.
Driving has always run in the Winterboer family’s blood with his dad Terry a former stock car enthusiast who participated in several races at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Grounds.
Terry also played football for a team known as Saints which was based at Municipals.
Darren on the other end was a keen hockey player and BMX rider.
“I reckon sport runs in the family. Apart from my dad Terry who was into stock car racing, I’ve won two of my five Three Hour Endurance Races with my brother Brett,” said Darren who is sponsored by Barons Motor Spares and Alignment Centre.
A toolmaker by profession, the former Khumalo Primary School and Christian Brothers College pupil dreams of racing in the ‘A’ category of the sport in South Africa.
He believes that dream can be achieved if he continues to excel in his division though he bemoans lack of competition in the country.
To date he leads in two categories in South Africa having won the International Passion for Speed race and the BMW CCG Club Racing Series.
