THE Sports Commission have set December 11 as the date for the crowning of the country’s top sports personalities in the Annual National Sports Awards. The ceremony is meant to recognise, reward and celebrate outstanding achievement by athletes and officials.Sports Commission spokesperson Tirivashe Nheweyembwa yesterday said events leading to the ceremony will kick-start with the unveiling of the finalists on November 21 at the Rainbow Towers.
“The judges panel is finalising selecting the finalists based on the information submitted by the National Sport Associations and the Tracking Report that the SRC has compiled and once they are through the announcements will be made on 21 November, 2013 in Harare,” said Nheweyembwa.
“Although we are happy that there has been an improvement in the number of submissions from the National Sport Associations, we note that this could have been much higher.
“But maybe due to the harsh economic conditions some National Sport Associations could have failed to send teams to international sport competitions and it therefore meant that they could not make any submissions.” Nheweyembwa added that there has been an improvement in the submissions by the National Sport Associations, especially in the juniors category.Golfer Brendon de Jonge is the reigning Sportsperson of the Year.
Samson Muripo (karate), Cara Black (tennis) and Kirsty Coventry (swimming) have been winners in the past.
